Week in review 3/23/12

Together work:
  • Bible Study using the guide from The Church at Brookhills
  • Praying for the World using Operation World
  • Praying for one family who sent us a Christmas card
Set up a fort one day to make school more "fun".

  • MOH II, week 22 completed - St Francis, St. Clara, St. Dominic; Children's Crusade; King John and the Magna Carta.  We made some fingerprint characters on the day we learned about the Children's Crusade which The Giver and Preacher Man enjoyed.

  • Botany - we finished up Lesson 10 and had co-op on Friday.  We performed the experiment in the book using pinecones.  You predict what will happen if you put one in cold water and one in the oven.  All 3 kids guessed incorrectly!  They weren't thinking through what the factors were and then were surprised with the outcome after an hour!

The pinecone in water completed closed up!  The one in the oven opened up!

  • Bug Science - The Giver and Preacher Man - read Beetle Boy and some other bug books, made bug snacks and other assorted fun.

  • Completed The Mystery of the Roman Ransom.

N- 6th Grade - Still need to come up with a good bloggy name for him.
  • Finished up the math portion of Spectrum test prep.  He got 20 out of 22 correct on the final test.   SATs will be held in 3 weeks.  This will be his first standardized test since we started homeschooling.
  • Completed 10 pages in Easy Grammar.
  • Made a 100 on Phonetic Zoo Lesson 6 Level B.
  • Reading Jack's Insects.
  • Completed his projects for Diana Waring's RRR co-op class :  wrote 4 journal entries as if he was sailing with Christopher Columbus and prepared an oral response to a question about Leonardo DaVinci.
  • Wrote a critique on Anasi and the Magic Stick.  (We're using IEW Medieval Writing).  He did a nice job on this and I was pleased with his work though he made an 87.  He tends to miss a few points here and there on what I consider careless errors.
The Giver - 3rd grade
  • Completed 4 lessons in RightStart D.
  • Completed 10 pages in Easy Grammar.
  • Made an 80 on Lesson 6 Level A Phonetic Zoo - homophone definetly tripped him up!
  • Read The Apple and the Arrow.
  • worked on a fused outline in IEW's Fables, Myths and Fairy Tales.
Preacher Man - Kindergarten
  • worked through lessons 58-60 RightStart A.
  • Completed Lesson 32-33 of IEW's PAL Reading.
  • Built sentences with his word cards.

Next week we will kick off our week going to hear Ken Hamm speak about Dinosaurs!  The kids are very excited and so am I.  I had the pleasure of hearing him just a few weekends ago at Teach Them Diligently.  So I guess Monday is a field trip day for us!

I think I'll add Jack's Insects to my ds11's reading list.

Looks like a good and thorough week! I love the idea of fort homeschooling!

Sounds like a good week.

I think I might try the pine cone experiment with my kids and see how they go with guessing what will happen.
