Week in Review: 3/2/12

Together Work:
  • Family Bible Study and Prayer Time using the Church at Brookhills guide.
  • Chose another Christmas card to pray over for the week.
  • Continued learning the Westminster Shorter Catechisms.
  • Mystery of History Week 20: Petrobrusians & Waldensians, Eleanor of Aquitaine, and Jews of the Middle Ages.
  • Memory Work - I Corinthians 13 and all other previous work reviewed
  • 2 new words from English from the Roots Up
  • Read Alouds - Finished Adam of the Road and Started Mystery of the Roman Ramson
  • La Clasa Divertida Lesson 10
  • Began Investigation 4 of Inquiry in Action.
N (6th Grade)
  • Taking a break from Easy Grammar to work on Spectrum Test Prep Language Arts.  I haven't been thrilled with this book so far.
  • IEW Medieval Writing, Lesson 19: Critique.  This is the first time we have worked on a critique and N found it challenging.  His first 2 paragraphs were fantastic, but for the 3rd he really got confused and wrote in 1st person.  He mistook a critique for criticism and wrote all the things he didn't like about the story.  Then he was very upset that I didn't agree he had completed the lesson correctly.  We mustered through a rough edit and he got the paper typed up on Friday.   Next week we will continue editing and adding in literary terms.
  • Phonetic Zoo Spelling Level B, Lesson 4 - "ough".  Made a 100 on his test.
  • Completed 5 lessons in Math Mammoth.  We are currently working on Geometry and the lessons have been quick and easy for him.  I encouraged him to work ahead and perhaps do 2 lessons per day since he was getting through so quickly, but he didn't like that idea.
  • Begin reading Crispin and the Cross of Lead and using the Progeny Press study guide.  This is new for me and him.  I knew we needed to add a formal literature study for next year so I decided to get my feet wet with some of the more recommended ones to decide what we should do for next year.  I'm not sure how I like this yet.  Hopefully by the time we finish it I will have an idea!
  • Muscianship Class and Guitar practice daily.  His lesson was cancelled today due to the threat of severe weather. (It's a fact of life when you live in Alabama aka Tornado Alley!)
The Giver - 3rd Grade
  • Begin Reading The Minstrel in the Tower.
  • Completed 3 lessons plus a test in RightStart D.  Still struggling with the math facts of 6's, 7's and 8's. Made an 80 on his math test.
  • IEW Fables, Myths and Fairy Tales Lesson 20 - writing from Pictures.  This story was Beaty and the Beast.
  • Completed 5 pages of Easy Grammar.  Working on plurals and possessive.  He doesn't want to slow down to do these correctly so we usually have to re-do them!
  • Phonetic Zoo Level A Lesson 4 - made a 100 on his test.
Preacher Man - Kindergarten
  • Has been fighting me on doing schoolwork lately.
  • Read some "books", sentences or words from his ring binder each day.
  • Completed lessons 51-52 in RightStart Math A; Sorted even/odd numbers
  • Read Dr. Seuss books on Friday to celebrate his birthday.
  • Did a few number dot-to-dot pages and used some stencils to trace shapes.
  • Organized the AAS letter tiles into alphabetical order (or maybe that was last week.)
I just keep reminding myself he is only kindergarten and a very young one at that - he won't be 6 until June!

    Sorry no pics this week!

Sounds like a lot was accomplished this week at your house! I'm thinking about IEW next year for my rising 3rd grader, but I'm hoping to see it in real life before I make up my mind. We "sat" on a RS C lesson this week because double digit subtraction just isn't gelling for my girl.

I mostly let my K-er play. She listens in on big sister's lessons, she has a math lesson 2-3 times a week, and we do a reading lesson about 4x a week. We do shared reading about 4x a week, too. I make her do handwriting when I think to. ;-) She's reading well and can do addition, and right now, I'm happy with that. She's an "old" K-er, too, with a birthday in November. I'm sure you're doing fine with your boy!
